Well, I was as shocked as anyone after reading Amazing Spider-Man #698 to find that Doc Ock pulled the ultimate switcheroo, and then his vow to live up to and surpass Peter Parker’s legacy as a ‘Superior’ Spider-Man in #700. There were definitely some jolts along the way to Superior Spider-Man #1 (Where we find that Peter has not gone to his final rest after all, but is pulling a ghostly Jiminy Cricket and acting as Otto’s conscience), including some prize therapy fodder for Pete, such as the ‘naughty secret’ between Ock & Aunt May on their almost-wedding day (AS #699). Brrrr.

The latest issue of Superior (number 4) has a great final scene, which reveals something that Spidey-fans have surely been waiting for. Even though it might seem inevitable, due to writer Dan Slott’s busting Norman Osborne out of his hospital prison-ward’s room, it STILL has an impact of awesomeness. It has that ‘Zod Moment’ feeling to me.

NOTE: What I mean by ‘Zod Moment’ refers to that moment in SUPERMAN II when Superman flew up to that window with the line,
General? Would you care to step outside?
The volume of cheers in that theatre I saw it in was deafening.
An electrical moment.

It starts out with two of the Vulture’s young gang spotting one of Ock/Spidey’s Spider-Drones and getting scared that he’ll come for them. Here’s what happens next:

and then of course, the final panel –

The ORIGINAL Green Goblin has returned.
Norman.Frigging.Osborn.

Now HERE’S the rub – note he says ‘someone who knows his every trick…’ in regards to fighting Spider-Man. Norm’s in for a bit of a surprise, no doubt.

I am SO looking forward to next issue.

Well done, Mr. Slott. Well done, indeed!
