Faith and begorrah, Friends and Fiends!
Ye Olde Dragon here, with a quick reminder to tune in tonight on Turner Classic Movies for a bit of early St. Paddy’s Day magic.
At 8:00 PM (EDT), join host Leonard Maltin as he once more opens THE DISNEY VAULT ON TCM. To start off the evening will be the classic DARBY O’GILL AND THE LITTLE PEOPLE (1960).
Directed by Robert Stevenson and starring Albert Sharpe as Darby, Janet Munro as Katie, Sean Connery in his feature film debut and Jimmy O’Dea as Brian, King of the Leprechauns, this film features some of the best forced perspective effects ever which actually still hold up today.
Then at 9:45 PM, TCM will be showing the episode of Disney’s Wonderful World of Color that promoted the movie, titled I CAPTURED THE KING OF THE LEPRECHAUNS. This particular episode greatly deviates from the normal promotional episodes in that instead of merely talking about the film, speaking to the actors or going behind the scenes, Walt Disney actually becomes “part” of the story and travels to Ireland to “meet” Darby himself and has him arrange a meeting with King Brian, as he wants to make a movie with “real” Leprechauns.
